Short description: Šiauliai county Povilas Višinskis public library (ŠCPL) is initiating this project in order to create a service – reading of memories for the elderly and people with dementia or its symptoms in Šiauliai county libraries. Reading of memories is about viewing typical stories, pictures, and photo albums to evoke memories and improve cognitive function through stereotypical associations.
The initiator of the project, using international experience, during the project will adapt the stories created by the U.S. program “Tales & Travel Memories”, on the basis of which stories suitable for the Lithuanian socio-cultural context will be created. ŠCPL, in cooperation with the Šiauliai Museum of Photography, will gather a collection of photographs about the Šiauliai region, which will evoke memories of previous times for those who use it; and will prepare instructions for implementing readings of memories available to library specialists.
Through the project activities, ŠCPL aims to create positive long-term effects and benefits for people with dementia, the elderly and their relatives.
